Market Recap for Friday, August 7, 2026

    Market Wrap

On Friday, August 7, 2026, the U.S. stock market saw broad gains, capping off what was set to be the best weekly performance for the main indexes since April. The S&P 500 advanced by 0.62%, closing at 7757.64. The Nasdaq Composite led the major indexes, rising 1.3%, to 26690.62. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also moved higher, gaining 0.28% to close at 54036.93. The small-cap Russell 2000 index advanced by 1.10% to 3034.49.

    What Drove It

The primary driver for Friday's market rally was the release of July's U.S. nonfarm payrolls report. The Labor Department reported an unexpected decline of 23,000 jobs, a significant miss compared to the estimated increase of 80,000. This data tempered market expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in September, which typically encourages investors by suggesting a potentially less aggressive monetary policy stance.

Thursday saw the S&P 500 and Dow pull back from previous day's record highs, with investors looking ahead to Friday’s employment data. That day also featured ongoing concerns about potential geopolitical developments regarding Mideast talks and earnings reports.

    Sector Highlights

Technology-related sectors were notable performers. Shares of software company Atlassian surged after reporting better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit and revenue. This contributed to the Nasdaq's strong performance, given the index's concentration in technology stocks. While chips and software stocks had risen earlier in the week, investors are becoming more discerning about the "AI trade" despite it remaining "intact."

The KBW Nasdaq Bank Index saw a slight gain of 0.17% on Friday, after declining 0.06% earlier in the day.

    Precious Metals & Commodities

Precious metals experienced significant gains. Gold advanced by 2.29%, reaching $4398.20 per ounce. This increase occurred amidst the jobs report that could signal a less aggressive stance from the Federal Reserve, often seen as supportive for gold prices.

In commodities, crude oil prices fluctuated. While oil prices had gained on Thursday due to geopolitical concerns regarding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, by Friday's close, crude oil declined by 0.35% to $77.02 per barrel. The S&P GSCI Index Spot, which tracks a broad range of commodities, advanced by 0.96% to 668.59.

The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) declined by 0.33% to 95.91. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note also fell slightly to 4.648%. On Thursday, Treasury yields and the dollar had both risen as investors awaited the jobs data.

    What to Watch Tomorrow

With the week concluding on a positive note, investors will likely monitor upcoming economic data releases for further clues on the Federal Reserve's policy direction. Geopolitical developments, particularly concerning Mideast talks, will also remain a focus. Specific earnings reports for the upcoming week will begin to set the tone for individual companies and sectors.

    Bottom Line

Friday's market advance, driven by unexpected job losses, suggests that investors are interpreting softer economic data as a signal for a potentially less hawkish Federal Reserve. This reaction highlights the market's sensitivity to monetary policy expectations and its potential implications for borrowing costs. Long-term investors may consider the market's current trajectory within the context of evolving economic indicators and their influence on central bank decisions.
