Buying silver bullion: what to know

Silver is the most affordable way into physical precious metals, and it is also the most physically demanding to hold: at roughly 1/80th the price of gold per ounce, the same dollar amount takes up far more space and weight. Product choice therefore matters more in silver than in any other metal, because premiums, storage volume, and resale liquidity vary widely between coins, rounds, and large bars.

    Coins, rounds, and bars

American Silver Eagles and Canadian Silver Maple Leafs are the most liquid retail products in North America and command the highest premiums. Privately minted rounds carry the same .999 silver content at a lower cost but rely on the refiner's reputation at resale. Bars from Asahi, Engelhard, Geiger Edelmetalle, and Germania Mint span 1 oz to 100 oz, and the 1,000 oz good-delivery bar is the wholesale standard used in vaulted and industrial channels. Cost per ounce falls as bar size rises, while flexibility to sell in pieces falls with it.

    Industrial demand shapes the market

More than half of annual silver consumption is industrial — solar photovoltaics, electronics, EV wiring, brazing alloys, and medical applications. That demand base makes silver more sensitive to the manufacturing cycle than gold, and it explains why silver tends to fall harder in recessions and rally harder in metals bull markets. Investors often use the gold-to-silver ratio, historically averaging near 60:1, to decide which metal to add at the margin.

    IRA rules for silver

IRA-eligible silver must be .999 fine or better and produced by a sovereign mint or accredited refiner. American Silver Eagles qualify; junk-silver coins such as pre-1965 U.S. dimes and quarters do not, because their .900 fineness falls below the threshold. Bars and rounds must meet exact weight specifications and be held with an approved depository.

    Practical storage math

A $25,000 silver position weighs several hundred pounds. Plan storage before you buy: a home safe rated for weight and fire, allocated depository storage, or a mix. Sales tax treatment also varies by state and can quietly exceed the premium you negotiated, so factor it into the comparison alongside shipping and insurance.
