Buying palladium bullion: what to know
Palladium is among the rarest precious metals mined, and it is the most industrially dependent of the four. About 80% of demand comes from catalytic converters in gasoline vehicles, with the remainder split across electronics, dentistry, hydrogen technology, and a small investment market. That concentration makes palladium the most volatile of the precious metals — capable of large moves in a single quarter.
Available investment products
The Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf at .9995 fine is the primary coin, and 1 oz and 10 oz bars from PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, and Credit Suisse cover most of the bar market. Inventory is thinner than gold or silver, premiums are wider, and buyback spreads can widen further in volatile stretches. Confirm a dealer's buyback policy before you buy, not when you want to sell.
Supply risk and the auto cycle
Mine supply is concentrated in Russia and South Africa, so sanctions, export policy, and power constraints are recurring price catalysts. Recycled autocatalyst material supplies a meaningful share of the market, which links prices to vehicle scrappage rates. Long term, battery-electric adoption reduces gasoline catalyst demand, while substitution between palladium and platinum shifts share between the two metals.
Where palladium fits in a portfolio
Palladium behaves less like a monetary hedge and more like an industrial commodity with precious-metal characteristics. Most investors treat it as a small tactical or diversifying allocation rather than a core holding, sized so a 30% drawdown does not disrupt the overall plan.
IRA rules
IRS-approved palladium bullion must be at least .9995 fine and produced by a sovereign mint or accredited refiner, and it must be stored with an approved depository — the same framework that governs gold, silver, and platinum in a self-directed precious metals IRA.
