Nasdaq Hits Intraday Record High on Tech Strength, Tuesday, September 22, 2026

U.S. stocks finished mixed on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. Technology shares lifted the Nasdaq Composite to an intraday record, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined. Continued optimism about artificial intelligence (AI) supported the tech-heavy index.

    Market Wrap

The Nasdaq Composite touched an intraday record high for the first time since early June. It closed up 0.38% at 27,212.68. Another source put the gain at 0.47%. During the session, the index surpassed its previous intraday record of 27,190.21, set on June 1.

The S&P 500 stayed close to flat for much of the day. One report showed a closing gain of 0.04%, while another had the index near flat at 7764.64. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.35% to 51,863.69, a loss of 185.14 points. The results followed Monday's broad gains, when the Nasdaq surged and the S&P 500 and Dow also advanced.

    What Drove It

Artificial intelligence and chip stocks remained the main sources of strength for the Nasdaq. Demand tied to AI showed no signs of abating, while corporate earnings in the technology sector remained resilient. Micron Technology and other AI-related shares contributed to the advance.

The move extended Monday's rally, when AI heavyweights such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) helped push the Nasdaq to a record-high close. Intel surged 12.2% during that session.

Falling oil prices also helped risk appetite. Crude continued to retreat as traders considered the possibility of breakthroughs in Middle East talks at a United Nations meeting this week. The speculation eased some concerns about supply conditions.

Interest-rate expectations remained in view. Monday's reports put the chance of another Fed rate hike next month at 50%, according to CME FedWatch, but that prospect did not appear to derail technology shares on Tuesday. Treasury yields had also eased from recent highs on Monday.

    Sector Highlights

Chip stocks added to Monday's gains, supported by persistent demand and optimism surrounding AI technologies.

Consumer-related software shares moved the other way. The introduction of Meta Platforms' AI assistant, Muse AI agent, added to concerns about rising competition in the software market.

Banks were also weak. The KBW Nasdaq Bank Index fell 2.25% in one report and 2.18% in another.

    Precious Metals & Commodities

Oil prices extended their decline as supply concerns eased. Brent crude fell below $100 per barrel and touched a two-week low. One report showed Brent futures down 1.96% to $98.37, while another listed crude oil at $95.21, down 0.60%. Sources said Saudi Arabia had restarted East-West Pipeline operations and could resume Yanbu exports later in the day, further reducing supply fears.

Gold advanced on Tuesday. Spot gold gained 0.37% to $4,359.08. Another source reported gold at $4392.80, up 0.20%, while a third showed $4397.10.

The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) rose slightly. One report showed a gain of 0.08% to 96.29, another showed 0.07% to 96.28, and a third listed 96.24. The U.S. 10-Year Treasury yield was 4.971% in one report and 4.96% in another.

    What to Watch Tomorrow

Middle East developments will remain important for oil supply, crude prices and market sentiment. Investors will also be watching for changes in expectations about the Federal Reserve's next interest-rate decision. The available sources did not highlight any specific earnings reports or data releases for Wednesday.

    Bottom Line

Technology shares outperformed on Tuesday as enthusiasm for AI remained intact, while the Dow, banks and consumer-related software stocks lost ground. Lower oil prices offered some support to risk assets, but the weakness outside large technology companies showed that investors remained selective.

For long-term investors, AI-related technology remains a notable trend. Interest rates, economic data and geopolitical developments could still change the market's direction.
