US Stocks Rise Friday, September 11, 2026, on Cooling Oil, CPI Data

Market Wrap
US stock indexes finished higher on Friday, September 11, 2026, recovering from declines earlier in the week. The S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite, and Dow Jones Industrial Average all rose after each benchmark ended the previous session lower.
The S&P 500 gained 1.05% to close at 7671.63. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.19% to 26391.06, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.12% and finished at 52645.46. Stocks rallied even as the latest data showed consumer inflation accelerating.
Dell was among the day's biggest individual movers, climbing to a record high. Hewlett Packard Enterprise and HP also rallied as hardware stocks strengthened. Oracle shares moved in the other direction, dipping even though the company's quarterly results topped estimates.
What Drove It
Lower oil prices gave stocks some relief after crude surged earlier in the week. Oil had climbed above $100 a barrel and reached $109 before retreating on Friday. Crude oil fell 2.75% to $99.66, easing one source of the inflation pressure that had weighed on investors.
The August Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.4% last month, up from a more modest 0.1% increase in July. The acceleration reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates at its meeting next week as it confronts persistent price pressures.
Bond yields remained elevated worldwide. US Treasury yields reached multi-year highs, with the 10-year note trading around 4.957%. At the same time, the S&P 500's forward price-to-earnings ratio dipped to 19.
Concerns about a prolonged conflict in the Middle East had helped push oil prices higher earlier in the week, adding to the market's inflation worries. US President Donald Trump's promise of a $5,000 payment to every US adult if his party wins November's midterm elections also contributed to those concerns.
Sector Highlights
Hardware stocks stood out within the technology sector. Dell Technologies surged to a record high, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and HP Inc. (HPQ) both rallied.
The gains followed quarterly results from AI server maker Oracle that exceeded expectations. Oracle's own shares dipped on Friday, but the results provided a positive read-through for the broader hardware and AI server market.
No specific laggard sectors were highlighted in Friday's trading. On the prior day, heavyweight chipmakers including Nvidia and Micron Technology lost ground, putting pressure on the S&P 500.
Precious Metals & Commodities
Crude oil retreated sharply on Friday, falling 2.75% to $99.66 per barrel. Oil had topped $100 earlier in the week and reached as high as $109. Its pullback was a key factor behind the day's stock-market rebound.
Gold slipped 0.05% to trade at $4405.10. The US Dollar Index (DXY) edged down 0.06% to 95.12.
US Treasury yields stayed high, with the 10-year yield quoted around 4.957%. The elevated yield reflected persistent inflation concerns and expectations that the Fed will act.
What to Watch Tomorrow
The Federal Reserve's policy meeting will be the main event for investors next week. After the acceleration in the August CPI, expectations for an interest rate hike have solidified. Markets will focus on both the Fed's decision and its accompanying statements for guidance on the future course of monetary policy.
Bottom Line
US stocks advanced Friday as oil prices cooled and the latest inflation data cemented expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike. Bond yields remain elevated amid persistent inflation concerns, but the rebound showed investors continuing to digest the economic outlook.
