US stocks rebounded on Monday, October 19, 2026, as investors returned to technology and AI-related shares after last week's significant selloff. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led the gains, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average delivered a mixed performance.

    Market Wrap

The Nasdaq Composite led the major indices, closing up 1.11% at 26430.89 in some reports and 1.25% at 26467.78 in others. The benchmark S&P 500 rose by 0.41% to 7690.73, though another source put the gain at 0.57% to 7703.35.

Reports also differed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Some showed a decline of 0.07% to 51966.03, while another recorded a gain of 0.08% to 52044.27. The broader Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks gained 0.25% to 2728.30, or 0.29% to 2729.19. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) fell, signaling less market fear. Reported readings included 18.54 (-7.25%) and 18.25 (-8.70%), with the index reaching 18.00 (-9.95%) at one point.

Among individual stocks, Intel rose after J.P. Morgan upgraded the company to 'neutral'. CoreWeave received a 'buy' rating from Goldman Sachs. Cleveland-Cliffs advanced after beating third-quarter profit expectations.

    What Drove It

AI-related stocks and the broader technology sector drove Monday's recovery. It followed what sources described as a "bruising selloff" or "nightmare" last week, particularly for data center companies. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq had posted their largest weekly declines since late June as persistently high interest rates raised concerns about investment in AI infrastructure. Investors appeared to have "bought the dip" in technology shares.

Markets were also looking ahead to key corporate earnings reports due throughout the week. One source said South Korea's Kospi had been influencing U.S. tech stocks, pointing to a global element in the rebound.

Although AI is viewed as a key economic driver, some market commentary suggested it could also be contributing to inflation and that the Federal Reserve's potential fixes might have broad effects. Investors continued to debate whether big tech companies are overspending on AI without clear returns.

    Sector Highlights

Technology companies tied to artificial intelligence and chip manufacturing led the market higher. The iShares Semiconductor ETF was up in premarket trading as it attempted to end a nine-day decline.

Bank stocks moved the other way. The KBW Nasdaq Bank Index declined, with readings of -1.00% to 167.33 or -1.11% to 167.15.

    Precious Metals & Commodities

Crude oil prices rose in later updates. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil gained 2.21% to $103.65, 2.06% to $103.50, or 2.40% to $103.84, depending on the update. Earlier in the day, one source reported crude oil down 0.64% to $100.76.

Gold declined, trading at $4163.30, down 0.43%; $4159.40, down 0.52%; or $4158.90, down 0.53%. An earlier report showed gold down 0.22% to $4171.90. The Dollar Index (DXY) edged up 0.11% to 97.20 after an earlier flat reading of 97.09.

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield fluctuated, with reports placing it around 5.146%, 5.143%, 5.148%, or 5.100%. That reflected mixed bond market performance for the day.

Bitcoin advanced, with reported gains of 1.20% to $81770.95, 0.19% to $81901.44, or 0.21% to $81916.55. An earlier report showed a gain of 1.51% to $82017.08. The S&P GSCI Index Spot, a broad commodities index, registered declines of 0.31%, 0.22%, or 0.60%.

    What to Watch Tomorrow

Corporate earnings will remain in focus throughout the week, particularly in the technology sector. The reports may offer more evidence about returns on AI investment and broader economic conditions. Investors will also watch economic data and comments from central bank officials for signals about interest rate policy.

    Bottom Line

Technology stocks led Monday's recovery as investors treated last week's selloff in AI-related shares as a buying opportunity. The rebound pointed to renewed confidence in artificial intelligence's growth prospects, but interest rate expectations and upcoming corporate results remain important risks.
