    Market Wrap

US stocks rebounded on Thursday, October 15, 2026, after falling early in the session. The S&P 500 advanced by 0.33%, while the Nasdaq Composite edged higher by 0.08%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average led the major indices with a gain of 1.08%, and the small-cap Russell 2000 rose by 1.38%.

The recovery followed a sharply lower close for the Nasdaq on Wednesday. Hotter-than-expected inflation data had raised concerns about further interest rate hikes, adding to a selloff in technology and chip stocks that hit AI-linked companies particularly hard. That pressure continued early Thursday, but gains in defensive sectors helped the major indices recover by the close.

    What Drove It

Investors continued to reassess AI-related valuations and the effect that rising interest rates could have on those companies. Concerns about AI spending and higher borrowing costs weighed on technology and chip stocks early in the day, extending Wednesday's decline after September's US inflation data came in above expectations. US producer prices rose in September, marking their largest increase in four and a half years.

AI-related companies with significant debt loads drew particular scrutiny because higher rates increase borrowing costs. Meanwhile, capital moved into healthcare and consumer staples, which are generally viewed as more defensive. Global equity markets were initially flat as AI and rate concerns pressured technology shares, though US indices pared their declines and finished higher.

Semiconductors remained under pressure. The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index, which tracks chip stocks, fell for a seventh consecutive day.

FedWatch data indicated implied October 28 hike odds at 27%, compared with a 73% probability that the Federal Reserve would hold rates steady.

    Sector Highlights

Healthcare and consumer staples led the defensive rotation. Drugmaker Eli Lilly gained over 3%, while UnitedHealth also advanced.

Technology stocks, particularly those tied to artificial intelligence, remained weak. The chip index posted its seventh consecutive daily decline as investors examined AI-related companies whose debt levels could become more difficult to manage in a higher interest rate environment.

Oracle, CoreWeave, and Nebius remained under watch after significant declines on Wednesday tied to rate hike concerns. TSMC, a major chipmaker, added to pressure on the semiconductor sector by issuing a cautious outlook for 2027, even after reporting a sixth straight record quarterly profit.

Banks were firmer. The KBW Nasdaq Bank Index advanced by 1.27%, suggesting some resilience in the sector.

    Precious Metals & Commodities

Gold rose by 2.02%, trading at $4190.80. Crude oil advanced by 2.62% to $97.58, while the S&P GSCI Index Spot, a measure of broad commodity market performance, rose by 0.21%.

The Dollar Index (DXY) retreated from an 18-month peak, declining by 0.27% to 97.28. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was at 5.089%. Bitcoin declined by 0.03%.

    What to Watch Tomorrow

Inflation data and Federal Reserve communications remain central to the interest rate outlook. Investors will also be watching technology and AI-related stocks as concerns persist about valuations, debt, and borrowing costs. Further corporate guidance, especially from technology leaders, could influence market sentiment.

    Bottom Line

Major indices finished higher on Thursday, but the gains masked a notable rotation. Investors moved away from high-growth, rate-sensitive AI stocks and toward healthcare and consumer staples. For long-term investors, that shift points to continued caution over inflation and the possibility of future rate hikes.
