Market Wrap Report — Monday, October 12, 2026

    Market Wrap

US equities ended mixed on Monday, October 12, 2026. The Nasdaq composite closed lower and the S&P 500 finished nearly flat, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained and outperformed both indexes.

The S&P 500 has risen 14% this year to record highs, but the advance has been narrow. More than four in ten of its constituent stocks were lower in 2026, and less than half of the companies in the index were trading above their 200-day moving averages.

Reported closing figures varied slightly across WSJ sources, producing the following common ranges:

    • Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA): Rose 0.25% to 0.42%, closing between 51784.64 and 51870.78.
    • S&P 500: Finished nearly flat. Reported changes ranged from a decline of 0.10% to a gain of 0.04%, with closes between 7803.92 and 7814.35.
    • Nasdaq Composite: Fell 0.07% to 0.45%, closing between 27242.19 and 27348.04.

The Russell 2000, a small-cap index, also declined. It fell between 0.22% and 0.30% and closed between 2798.51 and 2800.80.

    What Drove It

A rally in oil prices weighed on the market as investors prepared for the start of the third-quarter earnings season.

Rising Oil Prices: Oil jumped nearly $2 a barrel on Monday after reports of attacks on a Saudi airport. Higher energy costs can squeeze corporate profits and consumer spending, putting pressure on broad indexes such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq. Crude oil rose between 1.93% and 2.10%, reaching prices between $93.62 and $93.78 per barrel.

Anticipation of Earnings and Economic Data: Banks are set to open the third-quarter earnings season. New economic data due this week could also give the market further direction.

Federal Reserve Policy Commentary: Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said Monday that the US central bank should move "relatively quickly" to a restrictive monetary policy stance to control inflation. She put underlying inflation in the mid-to-high 2% range and said firms in her district plan price increases that outpace input-cost growth. Even so, investors expect the Fed to leave its policy rate unchanged at this month's meeting.

Narrow Market Rally Concerns: Reuters analysis showed how concentrated the S&P 500's gains have become. Although the index is up 14% to record highs, over 200 S&P 500 companies, or more than 4 in 10, have seen their stock prices fall in 2026. A few chipmakers and other AI-related technology companies have driven much of the advance. The technology sector accounts for over 10 percentage points of the index's overall 14% gain.

Geopolitical Context: A Reuters video raised concerns about a waiver related to Russian diesel. Another video said that "ceasefire deals cannot be 'taken as solid'," pointing to continued geopolitical uncertainty.

    Sector Highlights

Individual stocks and sectors moved in different directions:

    • Technology: Microsoft advanced and contributed to the Dow's gain. The stock reclaimed its status as a $4 trillion company after a year. At the sector level, however, this year's strong technology performance remains concentrated in a few AI-related firms.
    • Software: Salesforce gained after BofA Global Research issued a bullish rating on the company.
    • Consumer Discretionary: Chipotle fell after Starbucks said it was not buying the company, contrary to market speculation.
    • Financials: The KBW Nasdaq Bank Index gained between 0.35% and 0.48%, closing between 171.25 and 171.46.

    Precious Metals & Commodities

    • Crude Oil: Crude jumped nearly $2 a barrel following attacks on a Saudi airport, making it a primary driver of market sentiment. The price advanced between 1.93% and 2.10%, trading from $93.62 to $93.78 per barrel.
    • Gold: Gold declined between 0.43% and 0.62%, settling between $4190.30 and $4198.00.
    • Dollar Index (DXY): The Dollar Index rose between 0.08% and 0.19%, closing between 97.46 and 97.57. A stronger dollar can sometimes pressure commodity prices.
    • US 10-Year Treasury Yield: The yield on the US 10-year Treasury bond held steady at 5.237%.
    • S&P GSCI Index Spot: The broader commodity index gained between 0.42% and 0.48%, closing between 741.75 and 742.15.

    What to Watch Tomorrow

Attention now turns to the third-quarter earnings season, particularly results from major banks. Economic reports due throughout the week may offer more evidence on inflation and economic growth. Federal Reserve commentary will remain in focus following Cleveland Fed President Hammack's remarks today. Investors will also watch geopolitical developments that could affect oil supplies.

    Bottom Line

Monday's session reflected caution ahead of earnings and economic data. Rising oil prices pressured growth-sensitive sectors, while strength in specific technology stocks helped the Dow. The broader rally remains concentrated rather than evenly distributed across S&P 500 components. Long-term investors should weigh the risks of that concentration alongside the Federal Reserve's commitment to restrictive monetary policy.
