Numismatics is the study and collection of currency, including rare coins, tokens, and medals. Unlike bullion, which is valued primarily by metal content, numismatic pieces derive worth from scarcity, historical significance, condition, and collector demand.
- •Value driven by rarity, grade, and demand
- •PCGS and NGC are the leading grading services
- •Less liquid than bullion — longer sales cycles
- •Counterfeiting risk — buy graded from reputable dealers
Bullion vs. numismatics
Bullion coins track precious metal spot prices and are highly liquid. Numismatic coins can trade at enormous premiums to metal value based on rarity, grade, and provenance. Understanding this distinction is essential before allocating capital to collector coins.
Grading and authentication
Professional grading from PCGS or NGC provides confidence in authenticity and condition. The Sheldon Scale (1–70) is the industry standard. Even small grade differences can mean dramatic price swings for rare dates.
